This month’s full moon post is in honor of our Berlin Farmers Market neighbors, Tracy and Mark, of Truitt Farm. They consistently bring the most interesting and delicious veg to market and this week was no exception. Check out what has to be the largest cabbage I have ever seen!
We don’t necessarily think of cabbage as medicinal…and yet, food is the greatest medicine we have. Cabbages are nutritional powerhouses. They are high in antioxidants (vitamin C in particular) which help reduce inflammation and improve immune response, they’re exceptionally high in vitamin K which supports healthy blood clotting, and as a dietary fiber rich food they support digestion. A member of the brassica family of plants, cabbages contain highly absorbable calcium and magnesium and improve the acid-alkaline balance in the body supporting calcium retention in the bones. Whew!
Herbalist Maria Noel Groves, in her book Body Into Balance, mentions that the cabbage family of plants plays a role in preventing breast cancer and helps to detoxify the body of ‘cranky estrogen’ via the liver. They are especially beneficial to perimenopausal and menopausal humans. (Note: The cabbage family does contain goitrogens which can inhibit thyroid function. While cooking destroys most of these compounds, best not to eat boatloads of cabbage if your thyroid function is low.)
Magically, cabbage is associated with the Moon, the element of water, and is believed to bring luck. It is said that a newly married couple should plant cabbage in the garden first thing to bring good luck to their marriage! Who knew?
So, I invite you this full moon to seek out some cabbage goodness. Chow down on kimchi, sauerkraut, coleslaw and the like. Your body will thank you for it!
