Happy Imbolc everyone! And what fun that the holiday coincides with yesterday’s full moon and Groundhog Day. It’s like the universe is determined to give us something to celebrate. Imbolc has always felt like a holiday that requires a little extra faith and positivity. It represents the turning of the wheel and the coming of Spring; but the reality is gray days and subzero temps, ha! Ice, snow, and biting winds don’t feel very Spring-like. And yet…we must have faith that it is coming. This has been a trying season. There is so much pain and anger in our world right now. It’s easy to get lost in doomscrolling and despair. I know I certainly have! So perhaps the lesson of Imbolc is more important now than ever; the thaw is coming. The sun will return. Nothing remains the same forever. I’m leaning into the witchy lesson that often it is most cold and dark right before the light. Have faith and turn your face to the sun.
Imbolc literally means ‘ewe’s milk’ and I like to make something delicious with milk to celebrate the day. This year I made a milk-based challah because bread is always a reason to celebrate! I struggled a tad as typically Evie does the bread braiding in this house and she’s off at school now. And yet I still love the imperfect way it turned out. My hope for you all is that you find a moment today to find a bit of light and warmth and remind yourself that the thaw is coming. Happy Imbolc!
