January 2025 Full Moon

Writer's picture: MichaelaMichaela

January’s full moon is known as The Cold Moon, an apt name given our recent bout of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures! Today’s herb highlight is one that has found its way into my mug nearly every day this season - Cedar. Cedar is part of the Pinaceae, or pine, family of plants. While not necessarily considered ‘herby’ pines have long been important food and medicine. Most pines can be used interchangeably I just happen to prefer the flavor of Cedar. Medicinally the needles, bark, pollen and resin are used while the nuts are nutrient dense. I use the needles in my Apothecary. Energetically it is warming and drying with a taste that is pungent and bitter.

Cedar excels as a stimulating expectorant - meaning it helps to thin and expel stuck congestion and mucus. It is hand’s down one of the first herbs I reach for when the ‘winter crud’ hits. I like to combine it with Elecampane and Thyme for wet boggy coughs and Holy Basil and Marshmallow Root for dry spastic coughs. All pines are super high in vitamin C; you’ll want to infuse them into honey or make a cold tea to capture the highest amounts as hot water will break vitamin C down quickly. Simmering the needles in hot water pulls out more of the resins which relieve congestion. They are slightly analgesic making them helpful for sore throat. Cedar is warming and diffusive meaning it combats cold and chills. Seriously, Mother Nature gave us the most perfect Winter medicine in the form of evergreens! Magically, Cedar is used for protection and purification. It was hung near the home to protect from lighting and burned as smoke to purify ceremonial spaces.

So, as you sit with a warm mug of tea looking out over the trees covered in snow take a moment to thank the trees not only for their beauty but also their medicine! Sending you all warm and cozy thoughts!
